Former Prime Minister of Belgium, Member of the European Parliament
Guy Verhofstadt is a Member of the European Parliament and former Co-Chair of the Conference on the Future of Europe.
Born in 1953, he quickly rose through the ranks of Belgian politics. He became liberal party president in 1982 at the age of just 29. By 1985 he was Deputy Prime Minister and he served as Prime Minister of Belgium from 1999 until 2008.
After he left office, Guy Verhofstadt was elected to the European Parliament, where he was group leader of the Liberals and Democrats from 2009 until 2019. He also made a name for himself as Brexit coordinator and as a passionate champion of more European integration to tackle the multiple crises the EU faces at the moment. His latest book is entitled “Europe’s Last Chance”.
